Today we finally got our broadband connection from MTNL. Too bad it has a cap of 4 GB on it. Why dont they have unlimited broadband plans? Anyway, its great that we got the last piece of logisitical/infrastructural stuff taken care of.

[…] Last month when we relocated to Mumbai, we applied for a Tata Indicom internet connection. After sitting on our application for a good 20 days, they came back and said that the location was not feasible for them. Whatever that means. In the meantime, we used to camp at the InOrbit mall in Goregaon for 5-6 hours at a time using their free WiFi to our full advantage. Then by some stroke of luck, we discovered that we could actually use our Reliance mobile phone to connect to the net. The cost is about 50 paise (about 1.1 cents) per minute. We got a data cable and then plugged it to Deap’s laptop and got online using the Reliance phone. That saved us the trouble of batching up everything till we got online at the mall. Meanwhile, we applied for an MTNL DSL connection. You cannot use the Reliance phone to make calls when you are online. For the MTNL broadband, you also need to get a landline connection from them. They took about 2 weeks to give us DSL. So far so good. We had gone for a 4 GB - 512 kbps speed connection. After noticing our broadband usage pattern for about 15 days, I started looking around for an unlimited broadband connection. MTNL doesnt have unlimited broadband. Finally, today we got the local cable guy to give us cable broadband. He ran a cat-5 ethernet cable through the window to our living room err.. office. Its an unlimited 256 kbps connection. Thats the story so far. I’ll keep you posted if we try out any more methods of getting online. […]
